Music to listen to if you want to transport yourself back to post-Nirvana, mid ’90s grungelite-by-numbers hell. If you do find yourself in possession of this single, skip immediately to the b-side, ‘All Purpose Underneath’. This suggests there might be a less overwrought and slightly more interesting side to Pilotlight.
You can very much hear the band gradually piecing together the constituent elements that would make Bleach such a bewitching sonic brew; the gonzo experimentation and guitar pyrotechnics of the ‘80s US underground, married to Cobain’s Beatles-like melodic sensibilities and, of course, that searing, indelible voice.
Like Staind and Nickelback this lot purvey a kind of generic, sub-Zeppelin post-Nirvana rock that Americans undoubtedly describe as “kicking ass”. The single ‘Let Me Go’ is momentarily memorable while ‘Father and Son’ recalls the southern style of Lynyrd Skynyrd but no album especially one like this should be 55 minutes long!
New school acid house fans will search high and low for this record. The original version boasts dramatic chords, a deep male vocal intoning the track title and a resonating, bleepy bassline, while Klaus Wunderbaum’s version layers 303 lines into a blissed out nirvana that’s as timeless as Phuture’s greatest releases.
This Thursday August 7 will see Nirvana's classic Nevermind album tackled in its entirety, with Belfast musicians paying tribute song-by-song at the Oh Yeah Music Centre.

When Jaz cries “it’s a fucking crusade” you’d be a fool not to believe him. Corporations, governments and the general injustice of the world have fuelled their rage over the years and the result is an anger-driven, cacophony of noise that leaves many of the young pretenders firmly in the shade.

These super-short tunes are fresh, frantic barrages of noise that assail the senses with all the subtlety of a thunderstorm and wield much the same measure of power.
The thirteen tracks herein can be split roughly into two camps - the originals penned quick and recorded even quicker for soundtracks, and the covers dashed off as extra incentives on special edition albums, or just for pig iron
The Roses have been compiled numerous times before against the band’s wishes, hence the fact that Ian Brown and John Squire buried their grievances and hand-picked these fifteen stone cold classics for the one disc is an event in itself.

As gigs in Whelan’s go, this was a strange one. Brian McFadden was re-inventing himself. Unshaven and dressed in ripped jeans and a t-shirt, he clearly had the scruffy indie kid down.
What Courtney doesn’t know about life in the Hollywood fast lane (rehab, drugs charges, child custody battles) simply isn’t worth knowing. In her own words, her somewhat ironically-titled opus America’s Sweetheart contains ‘a lot of God and a lot of sex’.

In all, YES! is an unexpected joy, a heady, discombobulating cocktail of rock opera, obstinate punk and feel-good dance vibes. Ignore, if you will, the fact that Do Me Bad Things were ‘discovered’ by the same people that ‘discovered’ The Darkness. For all its calorific riffing and Rocky Horror-esque psychedelia, the true beauty of this record is its newness (as opposed to the novelty) factor. ‘Liv Ullman On Drums’ (featuring, bizarrely, Tom Shotton on drums) is an incredible ragout of ‘70s cop show theme music with hair metal, while ‘Time For Deliverance’ is a spine-tingling AC/DC inspired-Broadway musical number.
This is not a bad album, and if it was released three years ago it would have come across better, but now there is a lot of music like this around and it takes really good songs, and something very original, to make a band shine.
Anyway, the Dirty album proper hasn’t dated one second: Vig and Wallace had keen radar when it came to knowing just how much to sugarcoat the Sonics’ dissonant assault without compromising on raw power.
